Battle of Heligoland Bight

The Gazelle-class light cruiser SMS Ariadne was shelled and sunk in the Heligoland Bight by HMS Lion, HMS Queen Mary and HMS Princess Royal (all Royal Navy). The Kolberg-class light cruiser SMS Cöln was shelled and sunk in the Heligoland Bight by HMS Lion, HMS Queen Mary and HMS Princess Royal (all Royal Navy) with the loss of 484 of her 485 crew.

The cargo ship St-Paul struck a mine and sank

The cargo ship St-Paul, en route from Gothenburg to Sunderland, struck a mine in the North Sea, about 28 nautical miles northeast of Tyne, and sank quickly. The crew survived, and was transported back to North Shields by the steamer D/S Bruse ( Norway). It was Sweden's first ship loss during WWI.
